Each April, during Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services joins with local governments and community groups at events all over Texas to bring attention to the issue of child abuse and neglect.

San Antonio: 10:00am - Kick-off of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Senator Carlos Uresti and the Blue Ribbon Task Force will kick-off Child Abuse Prevention Month. Lubbock: All day event - "Pinwheels for Prevention." Lubbock CWB will display 1328 pinwheels on the courthouse lawn to raise awareness about child abuse and prevention efforts. El Paso: 9:00pm - "It Takes a Community" Dinner and Awards Celebration. We have a very special evening planned. For those sponsors at the Platinum and Gold level, a VIP reception will be held at 5:30pm. Doors will open at 6:00pm, with dinner and festivities beginning at 6:30pm. Our emcee, Ms. Felipa Solis and two featured speakers will highlight the need for community involvement for the prevention of child abuse and reiterate the importance of the Center’s work. The Center will also bestow the prestigious Mary Russell award and the Child Crisis Center of El Paso President’s Award to two worthy recipients who have shown their support to the Center through various acts of kindness. There will also be a “Fish Bowl” raffle as well as the highlight of the evening – The Teddy Bears for Tots Live Auction emceed by Springfire! Anyone who is interested in supporting child abuse and neglect prevention, which is the core mission of the Child Crisis Center, is invited to attend this event. El Paso: 8:00pm - Child Crisis Center of El Paso 3rd Annual "It Takes a Community" Dinner. This will be a fabulous evening with information presented on how the community can help prevent child abuse and neglect. We will have a delicious dinner, fun silent action and an exciting teddy bear live auction. Dallas: 11a-12:30p - Prevention is Key. The Child Abuse Prevention Coalition and its partners are raising awareness of Child Abuse/Neglect, commemorating the victims of abuse and neglect, and honoring those who protect our children. Special Guests include Gloria Campos, TV personality; The Honorable William Mazur, 304th District Court Judge; The Honorable Clay Jenkins, Dallas County Judge; and others. Tyler: 12:00pm - Smith County Child Abuse Prevention Month Proclamation. The Head Start Children will sing followed by the reading of the proclamation. Sugarland: 6:00pm - Light of Hope Ceremony. This candlelight vigil for child abuse prevention awareness is a joint effort between Ft. Bend County CAC and the Ft. Bend County CWB. Bryan: 5:30pm-8:00pm - Free face painting, fingerprinting and prizes…free movie at sunset. The entire community is invited to the event at the Sale Park - Downtown/Bryan.

Austin: 9:30am-4:30pm - Child Protection Day at the Capitol. The event will include legislative visits, advocacy and a public address. Participation will include TCCWB, CWB, TexProtects, Child Protection Roundtable, Texans Care for Children and many more. The event will take place at the State Capitol Building, Austin. Tyler: 10am to 2pm - Kidfest. Community partners set up booths with activities for children and families and public information on child safety. The Kidfest is open to the public. Multiple stakeholders will participate in Smith County including first responders, health officials, school personnel. Kidfest will take place at the Broadway Square Mall in Tyler. Nacogdoches: 10am-2pm - Diaper Drive, Rainbow Room donations and giving out CAP literature in Nacogdoches. The Community Partners Board, and SFA Interns will attend. Houston: 9:00am - Grandparents Raising Grandchildren event. Vendors with resources will have information booths; Free lunch, moon walk, ambulance, fire truck, and many more activities.

Youth Conference - What does friend mean & Keeping the Talk Real and Alice; For the caregivers - Attorney, CPS kinship will speak; workshop on "substance abuse", "it's not your fault", and "tough love." All Houston area kinship families and surrounding kinship families not involved with CPS are attending this event. The event will take place at 1865 Aldine Bender, Houston. Last year, this event drew over 1200 people and we’re expecting even more this year! Ultimately, we want to strengthen families by reducing risks to our children. Risk factors to our families include child abuse, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, lack of access to medical care, unemployment, and social isolation. Our goal for this event is to increase the public’s understanding of child abuse and neglect while providing education and resources to our community’s members.
